Adding some black turkey feathers, an old brooch, and a dangley key make it a little more interesting and a conversation piece.

Sewing has been another passion of mine, and after making a purse for myself, I made a few for friends and then decided to come up with a name and make more to sell. It has become an obsession, as there is so much about this process that is fun and creative and...addicting.

First of all, fabrics are to me like heroin is to an addict. I can't get enough. And when I see a great piece of fabric at a good price, I dig in my pockets and get it, even if it means I go without lunch that day. Fabric is gold.

Secondly, belts. I use and recycle belts to adorn and add panache to the handbags. Sometimes the belt dictates my direction rather than a fabric choice. A really cool belt lights up my eyes and I can't have enough of them either. Above is Black Velveteen named for the fabric and for a song I love.

It is November, 2010. Quite some time since I have posted on my page. This is unacceptable. So much has happened in the past couple of years and I should update you.

Medical issues: over with. I am a new person and feeling terrific. So, why the lapse in posting? I have discovered a new facet to my artistic endeavors. Making handbags. I'll share more on that in another post.

The painting continues, but on a different level. I submitted once again to Old Forge's National Watercolor show, and was accepted with the image, The Surrogates, pictured above. It is based on a building I saw in lower Manhattan, and once I found out what the building was, I had to recreate and interpret its beauty. On the outside of the building are statues of judges, mayors, and who knows who else, but prominent citizens of New York in an age before the building was constructed around 1898. One of the figures was known to me: James Duane, the founder of the town in which I grew up, Duanesburg.

James was quite a person. Mayor of NYC for several years, a judge, and landowner in a part of New York which was desolate and yet only a few miles from the capital, Albany. After his death he bequeathed his land to his children, who built homes, and two to my knowledge are still standing in the town of Duanesburg.

Other paintings are in the works, but this one I love and wanted to share. Enjoy.

New work

Hello all,

I am finally getting back to this blog and fighting through some tough medical issues and getting back on my feet. It is also that busy time of year, people going here and there and shopping and baking and attending parties.... hopefully you take time out to look at some art and RELAX.

Here is a new piece finished just the other day, and ready for a new show this coming week. I've called it "Paydirt".

I love quarries, and visited the Lehigh quarry in Glens Falls this past spring. It was a great tour, providing attendees with views of the control room, quarry and the HUGE kiln which processes stone into cement. An interesting process and tour overall. I have always loved rocks, equipment and moving and shaking the elements.

One of the themes I am working on is the smallness of man in his environment. Hopefully this piece conveys some of that idea. I want to work on the premise that regardless of how hard man tries to control the environment, it is too big and vast, and we are but a small cog in the machine.

Other ideas and paintings up and coming. Enjoy the holidays!

So now I am going to explore more. The reception on the 6th was fine, and I met some really nice folks. I got some information on climbing Cat Mountain in Bolton, which I am doing this Sunday. This should get me some breathtaking views of Lake George, and exercise which I badly need since I sit a lot.

There is this thing in me that loves to create, and soak up creativity from nature. I want to make more interesting art, and create pieces which instigate "talk" and conversation. Like this one.

Can you find the tiny people up near the top? I wanted to make this landscape different, and use nonlocal color, along with having one color be predominant. I also wanted to work on the theme of man being insignificant in comparison to nature, hence the smaller size of the hikers at the top, and the fact that nature has worked to create the impasse which they cannot navigate.

This piece is created on paper prepared with gesso, and all the lightest areas were lifted out with a wet brush. It's like sculpting on paper.

September 6th, 4:30-8:30, reception for Laura Neadle at Sweet Pea Farms, Bolton Landing, NY. Lots of yummy landscapes of the north country, summer, and images and icons of nature. Bring a friend and have some munchies and hear some music as well. I understand there will be a little live something there, and also artwork by some other artists.

At left is a preview of what you will see.

Saturday, September 6th, 2008

As an artist I don't sleep much. I woke up early today and decided to get this blog underway. This is a new deal for me, so it will take me some time to get it going and get it right.

I like to paint what strikes me. I create landscapes, but also portraits, and intimate work about my family, generations, and other hobbies that I have. I am an avid seamstress, and love fabric. Above is an image of a painting of my father. In the background I used a pattern from fabric that I liked, with artistic license. I am trying to find ways to incorporate pattern into my pieces, and this is one way to do it.
